Crew with San Diego Junior Theatre

Tech Crews are the non-performing half of a show’s company and is responsible for running the backstage elements involved in a production here at Junior Theatre. All crew positions are fully trained by Junior Theatre Staff or Guest Designers and do not require previous experience or training. Crew assignments are made by three weeks out from opening night and some positions will typically start attending rehearsals for training the week prior to Tech Week/Opening. Available positions and descriptions, and the application form can be found below.

In order to be eligible to crew a production, students must be ages 8-18, and be enrolled in a class or camp in the required session. Crew may not miss any performances or technical rehearsals called for. Call the Education Office at 619-239-1311 for further information.

CREW CREDIT

Once a student has performed as a cast member in two (2) consecutive Junior Theatre productions, they are required to serve on a Crew before they will be eligible to audition again.

  • Every crew assignment resets the performance counter, regardless if your students has performed once or twice prior.
  • Crew credit cannot be accrued for a future timeframe.
  • There is no limit on the number of consecutive productions a student can crew.

CREW POSITION DESCRIPTIONS

Usher:
Greets patrons, checks tickets and seats audience members. Usher are also responsible for cleaning and maintaining the seating areas, and any front of house areas. Ushers will typically have one day of training prior to opening night, and are not called for School Day Matinees. (This is a great crew for first-time students or those that cannot miss school for Student Matinees.)

House Manager: 
Supervises student ushers in daily duties and problem-solves patron issues that arise. House Manager will typically have one day of crew training prior to opening night and are not called for School Day Matinees. House Manager should be organized, professional and able to supervise fellow students.

Box Office:
Assists Box Office Supervisor in the selling and handling of tickets. Box Office will typically have one day of crew training prior to opening night, is not called for School Day Matinees and is released 15 minutes after the start of the show on performance days. The box office student should have good computer and customer service skills and be comfortable handling money and working independently.

Costume Run Crew
Works with the Costume Designer to organize, maintain and track all the costumes used in a production; assist cast members with backstage quick changes during performances; and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Costume Run Crew will typically have one day of training prior to tech week and be called for all dress rehearsals and performances including School Day Matinees.

Hair/Makeup:

Works with the Hair/Makeup Designer to organize and maintain all wigs/hairstyles used for a production, application of makeup and specialty effects, and assist cast members with backstage quick changes. Hair/Makeup crew will typically have one day of training prior to tech week and be called for all dress rehearsals and performances including School Day Matinees.

Stagecrew:
Works backstage to move scenery, organize/track props and manage the stage area. Stage crew will have between 1 to 3 days of training in the week prior to tech week and will be called for all tech/dress rehearsals and all performances including School Day Matinees.

Spotlight Operator:
Runs the spotlights during performance. Student may be located in a spot tower in the house and therefore should be able to climb a short ladder and be okay with modest heights. Spotlight Ops will typically have 1 day of training in the week prior to Tech Week and will be called for all tech/dress rehearsals and all performances including School Day Matinees.

Sound Board Operator:
Assists the Sound Designer in the set up and maintenance of wireless microphones and other sound equipment. Students will also run sound cue effects and live mix cast microphones and orchestral instruments during each performance. Sound Ops will have between 1 to 3 days of training prior to tech week based on the complexity of the production, and are called to every Tech/Dress Rehearsal and all Performances including School Day Matinees

Light Board Operator:
Responsible for presetting and shutting down of lighting equipment and runs the light board during performances. They will also help monitor and maintain lighting instruments and equipment. The Light Board Op will typically have 1 day of training in the week prior to Tech Week and will be called for all Tech/Dress Rehearsals and all performances including School Day Matinees.
